

A coral that normally opens wide is still drawn in. A fish is spending more time behind the rockwork. The return pump sounds just different enough to notice.
The controls are right there.
You could change the flow, move the coral, run every test in the cabinet, or start searching for a treatment. Sometimes quick action is necessary. More often, the useful first move is quieter: stop and look at the entire reef before deciding what the first observation means.

Why Observe Before Testing or Adjusting
Good reef keeping often looks less dramatic than expected.
It can mean noticing that something changed, resisting the urge to immediately explain it, and spending a few focused minutes gathering context. That is not hesitation. It is how you avoid answering the wrong question with the right tool.
A test result is a measurement of one part of the system at one moment. It becomes more useful when you know why you are taking it. Is one coral behaving differently, or are several animals affected? Did the change appear after feeding, maintenance, a new addition, or a shift in flow? Is the observation happening once, or repeating under similar conditions?
The goal is not to compare your aquarium with an imaginary perfect reef. Compare it with its own established pattern.
Fish behavior, coral extension, water clarity, pump output, and even the sound of the overflow all have normal ranges within a particular system. One unusual moment may be harmless. A sustained change, a cluster of changes, or a clear departure from the baseline deserves a closer look.
That leads to a better sequence:
Observe → identify the question → test or inspect appropriately → compare with the baseline → adjust slowly when justified.
Observation does not replace testing. It gives the test a job.

How to Perform the 10-Minute Reef Check
This is not a diagnostic routine, and it is not a universal maintenance schedule. It is a short inspection that helps you decide what deserves attention and what the next useful step might be.
Run it during a familiar viewing window when practical. You are looking for differences, not perfection.
Pass 1: Check the Whole Aquarium
Begin several feet away from the glass. Before focusing on the coral or fish that caught your attention, take in the aquarium as one scene.
Look at the water. Is it as clear as usual? Has the surface movement changed? Is there unexpected cloudiness, unusual stillness, or a different pattern of suspended material?
Look at the aquarium’s overall activity. Are most fish following familiar routes? Are several corals reacting at once, or is the change limited to one colony? Does the reef feel active in its usual way, or is the entire display unusually quiet?
Check the obvious physical signals. Compare the display and sump water levels with their normal positions. Look for a blocked outlet, a stalled pump, or a broad circulation change. A system-wide difference points toward a different investigation than one closed coral surrounded by normally behaving neighbors.
At the end of the first pass, ask:
What is different from this reef’s normal pattern?
Pass 2: Check Fish and Invertebrate Behavior
Now watch the fish and mobile invertebrates without assigning a cause.
Notice breathing effort relative to normal — the rhythm of the gill covers, not a precise count from a moving fish. Is it isolated to one animal or visible in several?
Pay attention to feeding response, familiar swimming routes, hiding, and where each animal chooses to spend its time. A fish remaining behind the rockwork may be reacting to aggression, disturbance, lighting, water conditions, illness, or something else entirely — the behavior is a reason to investigate, not proof of an explanation.
Social dynamics count too: has a territory shifted, or is a normally confident animal avoiding an area it usually rests in?
Veterinary guidance for aquarium fish emphasizes combining observed behavior with system history and water analysis — the visible sign supplies context, not a complete diagnosis.
If you see obvious severe distress, active injury, electrical danger, flooding, or failed life-support equipment, respond to the emergency. The ten-minute check is for clearer decisions, not for delaying necessary action.
Pass 3: Check Coral Appearance and Tissue
Move closer to the reef and compare each coral with its own familiar appearance.
Polyp extension and inflation can change with species, light cycle, feeding, water movement, recent disturbance, and other conditions. Research has documented both environmental influences on polyp activity and day-night patterns of expansion and contraction. That makes extension useful to observe, but unreliable as a universal score of coral health.
Look for a sustained change rather than demanding that every coral appear fully open at every moment.
Inspect the tissue. Is it intact, or is there newly exposed skeleton or a visible edge of recession? Has the coral been displaced, shaded, buried in sand, or crowded by a neighbor?
Unusual mucus production is worth noting, but keep it in context — mucus is also part of normal coral biology and protection, not an automatic red flag.
If you find tissue loss, record where it starts, how much of the colony is affected, and whether it's progressing. Exposed skeleton tells you tissue was lost — not why.
Pass 4: Check Flow, Equipment, and Recent Changes
The final pass follows the observation backward through the aquarium.
Trace the flow. Are the outlets aimed where you expect? Has algae, calcification, debris, or an animal changed the output? Water movement influences what reaches a coral and where particles settle, but a detritus pocket is evidence of a local flow pattern, not automatic proof of what caused a coral to close.
Check the temperature and water levels. Listen to the return pump, wavemakers, skimmer, and overflow. A new sound can be a useful mechanical clue. It might point to a dirty pump component, trapped air, an obstruction, a changed water level, or another issue worth inspecting.
Look at skimmer behavior and pump output rather than assuming that powered-on equipment is operating normally.
Finally, review what changed recently. Consider maintenance, feeding, dosing, livestock additions, coral placement, cleaned pumps, replaced media, altered schedules, or hands in the aquarium. A recent event may not be the cause, but it belongs in the timeline.
Ask the question one final time:
What is different from this reef’s normal pattern?
Now choose the next move. Record the observation. Run a relevant test. Inspect an animal or component more closely. Wait and compare under similar conditions. Or make a measured adjustment when the evidence supports it.
Example: What to Check When a Coral Stays Closed
Back to the coral from the opening — normally open midday, now closed.
The fastest response would be to change its light, move it into stronger flow, correct a parameter, or relocate it. The better first step is to determine what kind of change you're actually seeing.
Start with the surrounding reef. If neighboring corals are behaving normally, the problem may be local. If several unrelated animals look different, widen the investigation to the system.
Check for recent disturbance. Was the coral moved, handled, shaded, fragged, or exposed during maintenance? Did sand settle on it? Did another coral expand into it?
Watch the animals nearby. A fish or invertebrate may be interacting with the colony even if it is not present when you first look.
Inspect the tissue. A closed coral with intact tissue presents a different question from one showing fresh skeletal exposure or advancing recession.
Follow the flow. Look for a blocked outlet, a changed pump pattern, or a new collection of debris around the colony. Then review the timeline: feeding, maintenance, dosing, equipment changes, and anything newly added to the reef.
Finally, ask whether the behavior is isolated or repeating under comparable conditions.
The method may lead to a parameter test, an equipment inspection, closer observation after lights come on tomorrow, or a justified adjustment. It may also show that the coral needs time rather than another change.
The point is not to solve every coral problem by sight. It is to turn “my coral is closed” into a better and more specific question.
Why Consistent Observation Conditions Matter
A reef does not look identical throughout the day. Lighting, feeding, maintenance, and normal animal rhythms all change what you see.
When practical, run the Reef Check during a familiar viewing window. Similar conditions give you a cleaner comparison with the aquarium’s established pattern. You should still pay attention whenever something looks unusual, but consistency makes subtle changes easier to recognize.
